Cowboys in paradise – Alan Deidun

Comino represents the last frontier to many Maltese, epitomising the last vestige of wilderness on these largely gentrified islands. So much so that the number of campers who seek to get away from the maddening crowd by living it rough on the islet has swollen in recent years. As far as local jurisdictions are concerned, Comino is ‘annexed’ to Gozo, given that it is directly administered by the Ministry of Gozo. It comes as no surprise therefore that the ministry was behind the latest unilateral move to scarify the islet by summoning heavy machinery in order to formalise the main dust-beaten track on the islet as well as the access road to the Blue Lagoon.

Four protected shearwaters dead in Comino incident

Four protected shearwaters died on the coast of Comino on Sunday morning after they were caught on a fishing line. A video posted on the Facebook closed group Rubs Puppy Love, shows two men on a boat trying to rescue the struggling birds.  Ten birds can be seen in all, some of them floating and not moving. The video poster said all birds were freed except for the four that were already dead.  A spokesperson from BirdLife said that 18 birds were freed and another boat had found one more bird injured. This will be taken to a vet.  The birds, the spokesman said, were freed by hunters.

Migration of ducks, harbingers of spring

The majority of bird species that breed in Europe migrate south in autumn and, in most cases, travel all the way across the Sahara desert to spend the winter in Central Africa or even further south. These birds return back to breed in spring and the majority fly over the Mediterranean Sea. During this time of year, several species migrate over the Maltese islands and large numbers can often be observed on some days. The first ‘spring’ migrants heading north are usually seen as early as February when it’s still winter. The house martin and green sandpiper are often the first to arrive, while grey herons, hoopoes, barn swallows, marsh harriers and, sometimes, common cranes often follow. But between February and March, the first significant passage of birds heading north take place. And this involves wild ducks.

SSS to impose mandatory use of PRN for short-term loan payments

April 02, 2021 THE Social Security System (SSS) announced that the mandatory use of payment reference number (PRN) for short-term loan payments was moved to May 1 from its April 1 schedule. SSS President and Chief Executive Officer Aurora Ignacio said the management approved the one-month extension to provide members and employers extra time to create their My.SSS accounts, update contact information, as well as review their loan information. “We wanted to make sure that our stakeholders are ready to comply with our upcoming procedural and system changes so that they can also benefit from this program and realize its importance,” Ignacio said.
